Asbestos

Over thirty years ago, the U.S. Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).  Districts stepped up to the plate and inspected schools for asbestos-containing material and drafted asbestos management plans. Many did the right thing and removed dangerous asbestos from schools. However, asbestos that is friable (crumbly) and potentially dangerous still remains in place in too many schools.
