Member highlights
Two of our AFT affiliate leaders were highlighted for their work on immigration. Each one shares great personal anecdotes and experiences; listen to their interviews below.
Karla Hernandez-Mats is a middle school special education science teacher and first generation American. While growing up, she tried to reconcile her American identity with her Latino heritage, and credits a teacher with helping her to embrace both.
Montserrat Garibay, a teacher and vice president for Certified Employees at Education Austin, recounts her first day of school and meeting her teacher and inspiration, Ms. Hernandez.
