AFT Resolution

VOLUNTEERS IN THE SCHOOL

WHEREAS, thousands of teachers are unemployed nationally, with the figures increasing yearly; and

WHEREAS, school volunteers are in reality unpaid workers, and therefore serve as unfair competition; and

WHEREAS, many school volunteers are unqualified for the positions in which they serve; and

WHEREAS, school boards and administrations are promoting policies which raise the unemployment rate for teachers and aides by removing paid positions from the school system:

RESOLVED, that the AFT actively work to discourage policies and practices promoting the use of volunteers in formerly or potentially paid positions in schools.
