UNION BUSTING¾EMPIRE STATE COLLEGE, STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK

WHEREAS, Empire State College is a recently established experimental branch of the State University of New York; and

WHEREAS, the college is an explicit experiment in cost effectiveness which has resulted in serious deterioration of working conditions for all the staff; and

WHEREAS, the union leadership in the college has engaged in a vigorous struggle against these conditions; and

WHEREAS, in the last four years while the college has been expanding eleven of the eighteen union officers and executive board members have been fired and many others harassed; and

WHEREAS, many other active union supporters have likewise been fired and harassed:

RESOLVED, that we condemn this attack upon leaders and supporters of the AFT Empire State College. This attack is a serious threat to academic freedom, civil liberties and the right of public employees to organize. We call upon responsible state officials to reinstate those fired, to compensate those harmed and to act henceforth in good faith within the framework of collective bargaining.
