TEACHER RETIREMENT
WHEREAS, many teachers in the state of Illinois rely on the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System as the primary means of preparing for retirement; and
WHEREAS, the conditions and benefits of the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System are generous in comparison with the Social Security system; and
WHEREAS, requiring teachers in the state of Illinois to be included in the Social Security system would be ruinous for present and future retirees; and
WHEREAS, inclusion of future teachers in the Social Security system would jeopardize the financial stability of the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System:
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers shall formally support the retention of individual state teacher pension systems and object to their replacement by the Social Security system.
