AFT Resolution

SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS ON MERGER WITH THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

The AFT convention reaffirms the national union's long-held goal of merger with the National Education Association. Toward that end, we:

  •

    • Support continuing the work of the AFT/NEA Joint Council, which has already improved relations between the two organizations, fostered cooperation and begun to address issues, such as discipline, teacher quality and school infrastructure, important to members of both organizations and the people they serve;

      • Urge state federations and local unions to expand contacts with state and local affiliates of the National Education Association and form state-level joint councils with NEA state affiliates to work on issues of mutual concern;

        • Encourage unity between AFT locals and state federations and their NEA counterparts in organizations that reflect AFT principles and democratic structures; and

          • Develop guidelines to govern possible unification of AFT and NEA state affiliates. All state mergers will take place in accordance with these guidelines and require approval of the AFT Executive Council.

            This convention reaffirms AFT's commitment to public schools and public services of the highest quality. We remain firm in our belief that a united organization dedicated to this concept offers the best hope of realizing this goal for America's children and their families as well as the members we represent.
