AFT Resolution

SOUTH AFRICAN RACISM

WHEREAS, the racist policy, known as apartheid, continues to deny equality under the law to non-white residents of South Africa; and

WHEREAS, non-white visitors to South Africa do not receive equal treatment as do white visitors; and

WHEREAS, the United States condemns racism in all forms; and

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers supports the U.S. position which calls for the imposition of sanctions against those governments who are not moving, in a forthright manner, to initiate changes which provide for participation in a democratic government by its non-white citizens:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers reiterates its support for President Carter's position on human rights and calls for the President and Congress to cease all military and financial assistance to the government of South Africa until all races are equal under the law and can freely participate in a true democratic form of government.
