AFT Resolution

SECURITY DEPOSITS ON RENTAL PROPERTY

WHEREAS, tenants are frequently required to pay deposits to owners in order to occupy their residences in the form of last month's rent, security, cleaning, key, and other deposits; and

WHEREAS, owners are able to use these substantial sums of money in any ways they choose:

RESOLVED, that the AFT support legislation that would require the owners of rental property to pay interest to tenants on all these security sums held for one year or more, such interest to be paid annually to the tenants at the rate prevailing at savings banks in each state.
