SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
WHEREAS, the past year has seen numerous strikes by AFT affiliates attempting to maintain adequate funding for their school systems and maintain teachers standards of living; and
WHEREAS, AFT affiliates have been faced with a lack of leadership in fighting for adequate funding for education and/or outright hostility in the form of anti-strike injunctions from school boards these AFT affiliates had frequently been instrumental in electing; and
WHEREAS, strikes during the past year, particularly the historic one in Philadelphia, demonstrated the necessity of teachers depending upon their own strength and the importance of seeking the support of the labor movement; and,
WHEREAS, the labor movement is usually unrepresented or at best woefully underrepresented on school boards throughout the country:
RESOLVED, that the AFT encourage its local affiliates to run teacher initiated and sponsored candidates for local school board seats; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT seek the broad support of the local labor movement for candidates put up by its affiliates.
