AFT Resolution

RIGHTS OF PREGNANT PUBLIC SHCOOL STUDENTS

WHEREAS, in the past school boards have suspended or expelled teen-age girls for becoming pregnant; and

WHEREAS, at present some boards force pregnant teenage girls to attend segregated classes with other pregnant girls away from their classmates against their will; and

WHEREAS, some teen-age girls who are pregnant wish to attend classes away from their classmates to avoid ridicule:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers agrees with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare that the above mentioned practices of suspension, expulsion and enforced segregation of pregnant students is sex discrimination and is unlawful under Section 86.40 of the Title IX regulations; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers send copies of the Title IX regulations to all locals, print the regulations in the American Teacher, and urge locals to see that the regulations are enforced by local school districts.
