AFT Resolution

RETIREES IN POLITICAL ACTION

WHEREAS, members should continue to be a valuable asset to their union after retirement; and

WHEREAS, their knowledge, experience, wisdom and dedication to the principles that guide the union are not lost when they retire; and

WHEREAS, unions must rely on political and legislative action as well as collective bargaining to best serve the interests of their members of all ages, and retirees can add considerably to those efforts; and

WHEREAS, elections at the federal, state and local levels in 1996 through 1998 will have a vital effect on all AFT constituencies:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers, its state federations and local unions recognize the valuable potential of retired union members in the union’s political action program; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT strongly urge state and local affiliates to reach out to retiree members and involve them in political action.
