AFT Resolution

RESOLUTION ON AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS TRIBUTE TO ROY WILKINS

WHEREAS, Roy Wilkins has fought for the civil rights of all people for the past forty-seven years, twenty-two years as Executive Director of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as Executive Director of the NAACP, he was actively involved in the March on Washington which was instrumental in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Brown vs. Board of Education, the National Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and all of the executive orders for equal opportunity in federal contracts and federal employment; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership, the NAACP has joined with the labor movement in its struggle for equality and justice for all people; and

WHEREAS, he was the recipient of the AFT Human Rights Award:

RESOLVED, that the AFT commends Roy Wilkins for his dedicated service to the social, educational, and economic well-being of all people; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT reaffirm its commitment to and close alliance with the NAACP as a tribute to Roy Wilkins; and

RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be sent to Roy Wilkins and published in the American Teacher.
