RESIDENCY
WHEREAS, recent actions by certain boards of education, who have created great uneasiness and feelings of insecurity among teachers by interference with a teacher's right to choose his abode; and
WHEREAS, teachers resent being harassed by restrictive covenants of employment that smack of yellow dog contracts, peonage, and company-town attitudes; and
WHEREAS, teachers are asked to teach principles of democracy and the American way of life where a man's aspirations are not dictated by his employer:
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers condemn any and all actions by boards of education that would tend to circumscribe a teacher's way of life and that would in effect demote him to secondary status of citizenship in that he had lost the right to make decisions available to all free men, such as the right to choose his place of residence.
