AFT Resolution

RENEWABLE TENURE

WHEREAS, in the wave of education reform many school districts are mandating that teachers be periodically reviewed for tenure; and

WHEREAS, tenure is generally accepted as "continuation in the job after a probation period and the right to due process should a teacher be dismissed," tenure review is fundamentally opposed to genuine tenure; and

WHEREAS, the undermining of the rights of workers in general has become acute in the last four years:

RESOLVED, that tenure review be regarded by the American Federation of Teachers as one of several attacks on teacher security and good working conditions; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT rejects completely the concept of tenure review.
