AFT Resolution

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS THROUGH MEDICARE

WHEREAS, improvements in healthcare have resulted in greatly increased life expectancy; and

WHEREAS, many of the improvements depend on the long-term use of expensive prescription drugs; and

WHEREAS, many retired citizens with low incomes are being forced to choose between food and medicine to survive:

RESOLVED, that the AFT, in cooperation with the AFL-CIO, continue to seek legislation to provide a prescription drug plan through Medicare; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT, in cooperation with the AFL-CIO, continue to work to insure that such plans be voluntary, affordable and comprehensive; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT support legislation in Congress to restrict drug companies from preventing the manufacture and sale of generic drugs.
