PENSIONS AND FRINGE BENEFITS

WHEREAS, the rapid increase in the cost of living has seriously eroded the real income of wage and salary earners; and

WHEREAS, increases in wages and salaries continue to be limited by governmental controls and the tightening or budgets; and

WHEREAS, the teaching profession is in many states legally restricted from the negotiation of many such fringe benefits:

RESOLVED, that the cost of providing pensions and other fringe benefits, including social security payments, shall be assumed in full by all employers, public and private; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT seek legislation repealing the wage earning limitation on social security; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers attempt to secure the passage of legislation to accomplish this end and seek the cooperation of other labor organizations in order to increase the chances of success.
