AFT Resolution

PEER INVOLVEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONTROL

WHEREAS, a profession is marked by the amount of control over the circumstances under which professional activity is carried out by the members of that profession; and

WHEREAS, a greater measure of control over the circumstances under which professional workers in education should be in the hands of those educational workers; and

WHEREAS, in colleges and universities peer determination of recruitment, appointment, promotion and tenure represent greater professional control:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers favors peer determination in recruitment, evaluation, promotion, tenure and other personnel matters including the determination of qualifications for and by professional workers and that such peer determination be coupled with a grievance procedure to protect against abuses of due process.
