OBSERVANCE OF PICKET LINES

WHEREAS, the picket line is a basic weapon of labor organizations, and it is an important means by which, in event a work stoppage becomes necessary, solidarity within unions and within the entire labor movement is maintained:

RESOLVED, that members of the American Federation of Teachers are urged to observe picket lines of all legitimate labor organizations; and

RESOLVED, that occasionally the picket line is misused. In case of doubt by an American Federation of Teachers member concerning proper use of a picket line, the member should consult with the officers of his local union who should investigate and report promptly to the local's executive board or other policy-making body. In turn, the local's policy-making body should advise the member and all other members as to their proper action.  (Executive Council)
