AFT Resolution

NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was recognized in America as the originator of the nonviolent resistance efforts and thus became symbolic of the Civil Rights Movement in this country; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., received national and international recognition as a human rights worker and was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers mandate renewed efforts to establish federal legislation to proclaim January 15th as a national holiday in honor of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and

RESOLVED, that the national AFL-CIO be informed of this resolution and its support requested on the desired legislation.
