MEMBERSHIP VOTE ON CONTRACTS

WHEREAS, the principle of membership vote on contract agreements is a necessary democratic safeguard of union members; and

WHEREAS, the president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organization announced on February 2, 1970, that agreements reached by negotiators should be binding without membership vote; and

WHEREAS, the Nixon administration is favorably considering legislation to this effect:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers opposes any policy which would withdraw members' right to approve or reject contracts, and that copies of this resolution be sent to all members of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organization Executive Council.
