AFT Resolution

MANDATORY RETIREMENT

WHEREAS, legislation enacted in 1978 has forbidden employers to mandate retirement before age 70; and

WHEREAS, the legislation specifically exempted from its provisions until  1982 tenured employees of colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, this bill only exempts tenured faculty members therefore requiring a faculty member to give up his or her tenure if he or she wishes to continue to teach; and

WHEREAS, this exemption of such tenured employees has caused untold hardship to our members and in many cases has deprived them of the ability to earn an adequate retirement allowance:

RESOLVED, that the AFT press for legislation to remove this discrimination against our members; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT call upon the AFL-CIO to aid us in this effort.
