AFT Resolution

MANDATORY RETIREMENT

WHEREAS, the laws of several states--including New York and California--currently exclude tenured university and college faculty from the prohibition against a mandatory retirement requirement for all other public employees; and

WHEREAS, proposals before Congress have sometimes excluded tenured faculty from federal legislation to lift the mandatory age of 70; and

WHEREAS, such exclusions unfairly discriminate against a group of employees and deprive their students, their institutions, and their profession of the benefit of their invaluable experience:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers confirm its commitment to remove all discriminatory applications of mandatory retirement requirements to tenured college and university faculties from state and federal law. (Executive Council)
