AFT Resolution

ON MAKING THE BIRTHDAY OF THE REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. A NATIONAL HOLIDAY

WHEREAS, the historic struggle led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for people to be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, made him a heroic figure; and

WHEREAS, the unfinished work of Dr. King constitutes the major element on the agenda of democracy in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the official recognition of Dr. King's birthday, January 15, as a national holiday, would aid the effort to continue his mission:

RESOLVED, that this convention call upon all members of the AFT to persevere in the campaign for official recognition of Dr. King's birthday, January 15, as a national holiday for rededication to the ideals of human brotherhood, peace and justice.
