WHEREAS, the use of the polygraph is in conflict with the spirit of the Constitution of the United States; and
WHEREAS, this device has been used for the gathering of information by both private and public employers; and
WHEREAS, the results of polygraph tests have been used for job placement and retention; and
WHEREAS, the device has been used to disrupt the effectiveness of union organizing; and
WHEREAS, strenuous campaigns have begun at state and local levels against the use of the polygraph for such purposes:
RESOLVED, that this convention urge local and state federations to support anti-polygraph legislation at the state and federal levels; and
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers urge the Congress of the United States to enact anti-polygraph legislation.
