JAPANESE AUTO COMPANIES

WHEREAS, the wholly owned Japanese automobile companies Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Isuzu, which manufacture in the United States, are viciously anti-union (except in their joint ventures with UAW-affiliated American firms); and

WHEREAS, these companies have resisted unionization by the United Auto Workers and have conducted antiunion campaigns to intimidate United Auto Workers supporters; and

WHEREAS, as a result of these anti-union campaigns, united Auto Workers organizing efforts were defeated by Nissan at Smyrna, Tennessee, and Honda at Marysville, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, as a result of their successful anti-union campaigns these companies are able to compete unfairly with American automobile companies; and

WHEREAS, 30 percent of all automobiles bought by Americans are either imported from Japan or produced by Japanese-owned plants in the United States; and

WHEREAS, many teacher union members continue to buy Japanese cars despite the anti-union attitude of Japanese companies, thereby sacrificing American jobs, undermining union strength, causing a loss of tax revenues and hastening the decline of America's standard of living:

RESOLVED, that the AFT print this resolution in the next issue of the American Teacher; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT include an article in a future issue of the American Teacher about the anti-union campaigns run by Nissan and Honda to defeat the United Auto Workers; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT urge all its members to boycott Japanese automobiles sold by Nissan, Honda and Isuzu.
