INTEGRATED TEXTBOOKS

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers, American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations, at its December, 1966, conference in Washington, D.C., was one of the first national bodies to recognize racism in education as a contributing factor to the present perilous times; and

WHEREAS, the report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, known as the Kerner Report, reinforces these findings by stating emphatically that racism is the prime factor in civil disorders and stressed the need for immediate action; and

WHEREAS, new texts and study units must replace those now in use in order to present a more accurate history of this country and the world:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers urge its local affiliates to urge local Boards of Education to include study units show­ing the contributions which Afro-Americans and all other racial, religious, and ethnic groups have made to national and world history in their approved elementary and secondary school curricula; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers urge its local affiliates to urge local school boards to introduce integrated textbooks in all subject areas; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers direct enactment of appropriate legislation to insure the use of integrated textbooks in school districts throughout the nation.  (Executive Council)
