INCLUDE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS SERVING RECENT IMMIGRANTS IN TITLE III IN RENEWAL OF THE HIGHER ED ACT

WHEREAS, most recent immigrants rely on the public education and public higher education systems; and

WHEREAS, public institutions serve many students whose language and cultural diversity enrich public higher education for all students; and

WHEREAS, a significant portion of recent immigrants are educationally and economically disadvantaged as they enter college; and

WHEREAS, such public institutions would benefit significantly from resources designed to address such high levels of diversity with faculty development and student services support:

RESOLVED, that the AFT support and promote the inclusion and eligibility of public institutions in states with high immigrant populations in Title III of the Higher Education Act and that they be eligible for federal institution support, and that AFT support  an appropriate increase in Title III funds.
