AFT Resolution

IMPROVING QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION IN A TIME OF PROJECTED ENROLLMENT DECLINE

WHEREAS, heavy expansion of enrollments during the 1960's and early 1970's dictated large class sizes in order to accommodate the many students seeking higher education; and

WHEREAS, the teaching-learning situation prospers from instructor-student interaction; and

WHEREAS, large classes result in reduced student-instructor contact and hence in eroded educational quality; and

WHEREAS, society is demanding improved quality in higher education now; and

WHEREAS, projected trends in higher education suggest lower enrollments in the future:

RESOLVED, all educational institutions improve the quality of instruction by reducing class size proportionate to any decline in enrollment.
