HOUSING FOR THE HOMELESS
WHEREAS, the increasing homeless population continues to be a major problem in many sections of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the significant reduction in federal support for low-income housing is a contributing factor to increasing the homeless population; and
WHEREAS, the homeless population includes many families; and
WHEREAS, educating children who are from homeless or transient environments, such as welfare hotels, is difficult, if not impossible:
RESOLVED, that AFT urge the federal government to renew its economic commitment to low-income housing; and
RESOLVED, that AFT urge the two political parties to make housing for poor people a major plank in their election platforms for 1988; and
RESOLVED, that AFT urge the AFL-CIO to continue its efforts in the area of adequate housing for poor people.
