AFT Resolution

HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS IN SCHOOLS

WHEREAS, the accomplishments and contributions of the black and other ethnic and minority peoples of America have not been recorded and printed in our general American History Textbooks; and

WHEREAS, far too many Americans have been deprived of the historic and cultural achievements of black and other minority and ethnic peoples; and

WHEREAS, every child's self concept should be developed and his race and ethnic pride nourished:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers will support the thrust to have the history and culture of black and other minority and ethnic groups incorporated in our school curricula; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers will seek to have Boards of Education select and use textbooks and materials on American History and culture that will provide American youths with an in-depth account of black and other minority and ethnic group contributions; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers encourage its affiliates to concentrate on eliminating racist doctrines that permeate the total curriculum; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers encourage its affiliates to include provisions in collective bargaining agreements that would implement the intent of the above; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers publish in the American Teacher the names of those affiliates as they are able to accomplish the intent of this resolution.
