AFT Resolution

HEALTH CARE CRISIS

WHEREAS, the administration and the Congress of the United States of America are currently studying and discussing solutions to the health care crisis in this country; and

WHEREAS, one of the great problems facing legislators is determining how to pay for a program to provide health care to the uninsured and the underinsured; and

WHEREAS, one of the topics included in these discussions is the possibility of taxing employees for the value of their health benefits; and

WHEREAS, such a tax would be unfair, inequitable and contrary to the interests of working men and women:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers oppose any plan that would make taxable any benefits currently received by employees on a tax-exempt basis; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers urge the AFL-CIO to support this resolution
