AFT Resolution

GUIDANCE COUNSELING FOR STUDENTS

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers recognizes the right of every individual student to qualified professional guidance and counseling services (educational, social, emotional, vocational, and personal) on all school levels; and

WHEREAS, at the present time such services are not available in many school systems; and

WHEREAS, where programs do exist they are inadequately implemented because of insufficient funding:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support federal and state legislation to provide funds necessary for the implementation of an effective guidance and counseling program at all school levels; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support a realistic counselor-pupil ratio consistent with recognized professional standards; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers support formation of a national committee t [a] study methods for the establishment and extension of programs, as well as the development of innovative techniques, designed to assure every child the services of an effective guidance and counseling program, and [b] to study methods by which the American Federation of Teachers may better serve pupil personnel workers in its membership.  (Executive Council)
