FOSTERING YOUNG LABOR LEADERS WITHIN THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS

WHEREAS, the long-term viability and success of the labor movement depends in part on organizing and engaging with the next generation of union members; and

WHEREAS, young workers have been leaders in resurgent movements for labor rights and economic justice; and

WHEREAS, young labor leaders are bringing a vital energy and enthusiasm to the labor movement, and they desire and appreciate the mentorship of current leaders and activists; and

WHEREAS, it is necessary for the long-standing values of the labor movement to be passed down to new generations of unionists while allowing for the space and opportunities for young leaders to shape the movement in order to meet their dreams and aspirations; and

WHEREAS, the American Federation of Teachers already has young union leaders who are eager to learn more and participate more fully in the life of the organization:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers will develop programs that develop, provide mentorship for, and track the growth of young union leaders; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT will encourage its local affiliates to provide opportunities for young unionists to gain experience as union leaders; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT will draw upon the experiences of current young labor leaders in order to develop an outreach program for young workers; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT will provide opportunities for young unionists to share experiences across constituencies so that they can learn more about the issues, concerns and desires of their sisters and brothers; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT will develop programs that draw upon the experiences of young labor leaders and provide for their continued development and pilot at least one program by the end of 2013 and report on the success of this program at the 2014 biennial convention.
