AFT Resolution

FEDERAL STUDENT AID

WHEREAS, the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, National Direct Student Loan, State Student Incentive Grants, College Work-Study and Guaranteed Student Loans are the backbone of the federal programs of aid to students in colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, these programs cover full and part-time college students for a period of up to four years; and

WHEREAS, the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants pay only one-half of all tuition needs:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers calls upon Congress to fully fund all existing federal financial aid programs; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT calls upon Congress to remove the four-year limit on receiving financial aid and allow a student to receive monies during the time such student is enrolled in a degree granting program; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT calls upon the Congress to eliminate the (half-cost) provision of the BEOG.
