FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION
WHEREAS, growing numbers of AFT teachers are teaching or planning family life education courses; and
WHEREAS, family life includes decisions regarding contraception, adoption, abortion, and finances as well as sex and sex roles; and
WHEREAS, laws exist that limit or deny family life education to all students and provide penalties for teachers who instruct such classes:
RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers urges its constituent locals to demand that family life education courses address themselves to the full spectrum of family problems, including the varying perspectives of opponents and opponents of controversial issues; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT opposes and will urge the repeal of laws that restrict the academic freedom of teachers of family life education; and
RESOLVED, that this resolution supersedes the present statement in the AFT policy manual; and
RESOLVED, that parents who might object to certain parts of family life education may remove their children from such classes.
