AFT Resolution

FAIR MINIMUM WAGE LAW

WHEREAS, the minimum wage has not been increased since 1974; and

WHEREAS, a worker receiving the current minimum wage can work full time and still be eligible for welfare, food stamps and other public assistance because the current rate falls below the poverty level for a family of four; and

WHEREAS, all of the arguments used against a fair increase in the minimum wage are documentarily false:

RESOLVED, that the AFT support the efforts of the AFL-CIO to secure passage of H.R. 7410 to raise the minimum wage above the poverty  level; and

RESOLVED, that our support for a fair minimum wage include opposition to such gimmicks as youth subminimums which would result in the displacement of full time workers.
