AFT Resolution

THE FAIR HOUSING ACT AMENDMENTS

WHEREAS, fair housing is a basic ingredient of the civil rights program; and

WHEREAS, the creation of an effective and efficient enforcement mechanism, and administrative adjudication process within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is long overdue, and is essential for substantial progress in achieving the goals of the Fair Housing Act; and

WHEREAS, H.R. 5200, the Fair Housing Act Amendments, if adopted without any amendments, should help bring about faster and more equitable resolution of housing discrimination charges, more vigorous enforcement of the Fair Housing Act, more effective action against "red-lining," and the prohibition of discrimination against handicapped persons:

RESOLVED, that this convention call upon all AFT affiliates to help achieve passage of H.R. 5200, without any amendments, by effective communication with their respective members of congress, directly and through memorialization by state and local legislative bodies, and with the President of the United States.
