ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY

WHEREAS, advances in medical science and technology have led to profound moral and ethical dilemmas; and

WHEREAS, health professionals are frequently involved in such moral and ethical dilemmas; and

WHEREAS, lack of policies on these issues may lead to decision making based on ability to pay rather than need; and

WHEREAS, desires of the individual should play a major role in the decision making process:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers supports legislation that provides for "living wills," which allow the individual a greater say in his/her destiny; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers supports legislation which gives a comprehensive definition of death, thereby providing health professionals with clear guidelines; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers promotes the establishment of ethics committees with staff nurses' participation at all health care facilities; and

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers researches and provides materials to all health care locals regarding ethical implications of technology.
