AFT Resolution

EMPLOYMENT BIAS AGAINST PERSONS BECAUSE OF PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

WHEREAS, a recent Los Angeles Times article (May 18, 1980, front page) documented that employment bias against persons because they are overweight is widespread in both private and government employment; and

WHEREAS, the Maryland Human Relations Commission has issued a report concluding that fat people are discriminated against almost as much as blacks and other racial minorities; and

WHEREAS, the AFT has consistently opposed employment discrimination against numerous classes of persons, such as racial minorities, women, gays and others:

RESOLVED, that the AFT reaffirm its opposition to employment discrimination against people because of their physical appearance, unless the employer can prove that the person's physical appearance can conclusively affect job performance. (Executive Council)
