AFT Resolution

ELIMINATION OF SEX DISCRIMINATION IN TEXTBOOKS

WHEREAS, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions receiving federal funding; and

WHEREAS, the law states, "Nothing in this regulation shall be interpreted as requiring or prohibiting or abridging the use of particular textbooks or curricular materials;" and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that the goal of a truly nonsexist society be achieved:

RESOLVED, that to the extent possible all selected instructional materials for use in the classroom provide equal treatment of both sexes and fully depict the accomplishments of women; and

RESOLVED, that AFT locals actively campaign for the use of non-sexist educational materials.
