DISPUTE BETWEEN AFT LOCAL 3220 AND THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON ADMINISTRATION
WHEREAS, teaching assistants at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have enjoyed collective bargaining rights under a voluntary recognition agreement since 1969; and
WHEREAS, that recognition agreement has resulted in five collective bargaining agreements; and
WHEREAS, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Administration has refused to bargain in good faith since the most recent collective bargaining agreement expired on August 26, 1979; and
WHEREAS, during a 34-day strike by teaching assistants in April and May of 1980, the University of Wisconsin- Madison Administration refused to accept a compromise contract proposal from an impartial mediator or final and binding interest arbitration; and
WHEREAS, the primary unresolved issues remaining between the University of Wisconsin-Madison Administration and AFT Local 3220 are the final and binding arbitration of disputes, and the right of all members of the bargaining unit to be paid for their labor and receive the rights and benefits of the collective bargaining agreement; and
WHEREAS, on August 5, 1980, the University of Wisconsin-Madison declared its intent to terminate the bargaining relationship with 3220 effective immediately:
RESOLVED, that the AFT condemns the University of Wisconsin-Madison Administration for its failure to bargain in good faith with Local 3220, and its intent to terminate the bargaining relationship with local 3220; and
RESOLVED, that the AFT will include a notice that this dispute is still in progress in every issue of the American Teacher until the dispute is settled; and
RESOLVED, that AFT members who are alumni of the University of Wisconsin-Madison do not make donations to the University and that the AFT does not provide any research funds to the University; and
RESOLVED, that AFT members will not attend any convention, conference, or other special event at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution shall be sent to the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the president of the University of Wisconsin system, the president of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, the Governor of Wisconsin, the president of the Wisconsin Federation of Teachers, the president of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, and the president of the Madison Federation of Labor/ AFL-CIO.(1980)
