CRISIS IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING

WHEREAS, many municipalities face a crisis in affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO recognizes the importance of affordable housing to union households; and

WHEREAS, affordable housing is central to recruiting and retaining teachers; and

WHEREAS, educated union members contribute to social improvement and become the backbone of their communities:

 

RESOLVED, that the AFT support and encourage federal legislation for the building of affordable housing and the subsidization of apartment units; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT research and propose legislation that funds the construction of new and affordable housing and the rehabilitation of housing units in the core of urban centers; and

RESOLVED, that the AFT join with the AFL-CIO to investigate the feasibility of set-aside housing units in planned construction and renovation projects for union members.
