AFT Resolution

COURSE ON BLACK HISTORY FOR TEACHERS

WHEREAS, new teachers are frequently without adequate knowledge of the culture and history of the black contributions to America; and

WHEREAS, it is incumbent on all teachers to eradicate the distorted view of black history which has long prevailed in our country; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the schools to present a truthful account of our cultural and historical heritage:

RESOLVED, that the AFT uses its influence and prestige to convince teacher training institutions throughout the country to include black history and culture in existing American history courses and that these courses should be listed as required courses for all students; and

RESOLVED, that new and experienced teachers be encouraged to take at least one course on the contributions of minority groups to American history; and

RESOLVED, that these courses be taught by persons knowledgeable in this area.
