CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY
WHEREAS, many communities across the nation continue to have their lives disrupted by sudden corporate decisions to close or move plants; and
WHEREAS, as such sudden moves cause considerable economic and psychological hardship to the community at large and to families in particular; and
WHEREAS, sudden loss of income can have catastrophic social and personal consequences having a severe impact on children; and
WHEREAS, such sudden moves are particularly disruptive and damaging to the tax base that helps support education; and
WHEREAS, there is currently before the Congress bills to prevent corporate closings and moving without proper notice; and
WHEREAS, such legislation does not prevent the right to relocate but merely requires proper long-term notification to the communities and employees to be affected:
RESOLVED, that the AFT and the AFL-CIO intensify efforts to promote this legislation.
