AFT Resolution

CONTRACTING OUT

WHEREAS, school districts and other public sector employers are seeking to reduce expenditures by hiring private contractors to perform services previously performed by public employees; and

WHEREAS, union workers in the public sector are being replaced by nonunion, private sector workers, thereby weakening unions; and

WHEREAS, the services provided by such private contractors generally have been shown to be of far lower quality than those provided by public employees; and

WHEREAS, service of the public interest must not be lessened by private concerns regarding profitability:

RESOLVED, that AFT assert its full support for AFL-CIO condemnation of the practice of replacing public employees with private contractors; and

RESOLVED, that AFT join with AFL-CIO in its condemnation of Reagan administration support and encouragement for the privatization of the public sector; and

RESOLVED, that AFT shall provide all possible support for AFL-CIO efforts to combat the privatization of the public sector; and

RESOLVED, that AFT, through its state affiliates, shall provide all possible assistance to member locals combating loss of jobs due to the use of private contractors.
