CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR WOMEN

WHEREAS, women have been prevented from developing their potential and have been forced to interrupt their education because of the biological function of child bearing and the socially assigned role of child rearing; and

WHEREAS, educational institutions reflect the bias of society with regard to the role of women and present barriers which make it difficult for women to continue their education; and

WHEREAS, there is an increasing interest and need by women to continue their education:

RESOLVED, that the AFT demand that measures be implemented to facilitate continuing education for women. These measures must include the following:

• Revision of requirements for residency, full time enrollment, credit transfers and the like in order to accommodate the needs of women;

• Institution of flexible scheduling in order to accommodate the particular problems of women;

• Establishment of child care facilities in or near education on a part time basis; and

• Availability of financial aid for women continuing their education on a part time basis; and

• Development of special re-entry and mid-career programs.
