AFT Resolution

CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

WHEREAS, today the nation stands on the brink of a constitutional crisis. Thirty-two of the 34 states needed to call for a national constitutional convention have already taken this precipitous action. Shockingly, in taking such a drastic step, at least 15 of the first 22 states that did so failed to hold a single legislative hearing on the issue. No consideration was given in these states to either the constitutional dangers of convening such a convention or the potential for harm that a balanced budget requirement would inflict on federal, state, and local governments:

RESOLVED, that the AFT continue to oppose in the Congress and in the states efforts to undermine the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. economy, urge state legislators to withdraw any calls for such a convention already submitted, and continue efforts in cooperation with the rest of the labor movement to achieve this objective.
