AFT Resolution

CALIFORNIA BUDGET CRISIS

WHEREAS, $1.2 billion was cut from the budget for K-12 and community college education in California in the 1991-92 school year; and

WHEREAS, Governor Pete Wilson has proposed to cut $2.3 billion from the 1992-93 budget for these systems in addition to deep cuts and high tuition increases in the California State University and University of California systems; and

WHEREAS, such deep cuts would compromise the ability of California teachers, paraprofessionals and school related personnel to provide the instruction and support vital to their students:

RESOLVED, that the American Federation of Teachers calls upon Governor Pete Wilson to end California's budget stalemate by abandoning his demand for crippling reductions in education funding and to work with legislative leaders to fashion an equitable budget agreement; and

RESOLVED, that this call be immediately communicated to Governor Wilson.
