AFT Resolution

BINDING ARBITRATION

WHEREAS, there is a concerted effort being made in many state legislatures to introduce compulsory binding arbitration of contract disputes (as distinct from grievances) as a substitute for the right to strike; and

WHEREAS, binding arbitration is not in fact an impartial procedure contrary to appearances; and

WHEREAS, binding arbitration interferes with good faith negotiations; and

WHEREAS, the denial of the right to strike is a violation of the liberty of free people:

RESOLVED, that this convention opposes any legislation for teachers and other employees, which would include compulsory binding arbitration of contract disputes.
