AFT Resolution

ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN LABOR ALLIANCE

WHEREAS, the presence of Asian Pacific Americans in the workforce has doubled each decade since the 1970s; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than 200,000 Asian Pacific Americans are union members; and

WHEREAS, a large segment of AFT membership is Asian Pacific American; and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO has created a national membership organization in response to the growing number of Asian Pacific Americans in the American work force and labor unions; and

WHEREAS, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance’s primary aims and objectives are t

  • educate Asian Pacific workers and their communities about labor unions and the principles of trade unionism, as well as to provide a vehicle for the particular concerns of Asian Pacific American workers; and
  • promote, support and assist the organizing of Asian Pacific American workers into unions; and
  • promote political education and voter registration programs among Asian Pacific American workers; and
  • promote the training, empowerment and leadership to Asian Pacific Americans within the labor movement and the Asian Pacific American communities; and
  • defend the advocate for the civil and human rights of Asian Pacific Americans, immigrants and all other people of color; and
  • develop ties with international organizations, especially with labor unions in Asia and the Pacific, and seek steps to promote world peace:

RESOLVED, that the AFT encourage its state and local affiliates to support and participate in the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance.
